Supportive Housing Program (Homeless Project), Georgia Legal Services Program
The Savannah office of Georgia Legal Services operates a project for homeless persons under a grant from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).The project receives federal funds provided by the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. Persons who qualify as homeless under the HUD definition are eligible to receive free legal services. The services include legal representation or assistance in the areas of public benefits, divorces with recent domestic violence, suits for past wage claims, legitimations, wrongful evictions from shelters, transitional housing and Shelter plus Care Section 8 programs, assistance in obtaining documents required to obtain identification cards and social security cards, assistance in obtaining criminal records, expungement of criminal records, and restoration of Georgia driver's licenses where suspension have occurred due to failure to pay child support. Other cases are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. The project does not accept fee-generating cases or criminal defense matters. The operating hours are from 9:00am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. One attorney and an Americorps volunteer staff the project. |
