Presidential Disaster Declaration for Georgia Issued: Residents May Call FEMA at 1-800-621-FEMA to Apply for Assistance

Governor Sonny Perdue today announced that President Obama has issued a Federal Disaster Declaration for individual assistance to aid residents of Cobb, Paulding, Douglas and Cherokee counties with recovery efforts in the wake of flooding that hit Georgia earlier this week. The portion of Governor Perdue's request covering other counties and aid to governments that sustained damage to buildings and public costs due to the storms is still pending.

Countrywide Checks on the Way to Homeowners
|
|
|
The Federal Trade Commission is mailing 450,177 refund checks worth almost $108 million to homeowners overcharged by Countrywide Home Loans, which collected excessive fees from borrowers who were already struggling to keep their homes. This group includes 19,529 Georgians. The amount of the checks will vary from $500 to several thousand dollars. The refunds are being distributed to consumers whose loans were serviced by Countrywide between January 1, 2005, and July 1, 2008.
Please make sure your receptionist and/or intake paralegals are aware of this. I anticipate calls from individuals who receive a check but are unsure of what they are. Also, I fear that there will be scammers out there who may seek to use these checks as an opportunity to make money, so let’s be alert for those calls also.
